Kaizer Chiefs will look to gain ground on their rivals as they take on bottom-feeders, Maritzburg United at FNB Stadium on Saturday.

The Glamour Boys currently in sixth place, eight points behind Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns who are first and second respectively, and will look to work up some winning momentum, having emerged victorious in their last outing with a 3-2 win over Highlands Park.

They come up against a side also fresh off a positive result, as new coach Eric Tinkler registered his second win at the helm, which was only the third overall in the current campaign for the club.

The Team of Choice have struggled to recreate the heroics of last season, which saw them record their highest top-flight finish in history. They will be looking to build on their 2-1 victory over AmaZulu, and three points against Amakhosi could lift them off the bottom of the table, depending on the result between Black Leopards and Chippa United.

However, against the Soweto giants, Tinkler faces a different proposition, coming up against a coach who will know Maritzburg’s culture all too well, having spent some time in charge of the club.

The Bafana legend is quoted by the club website speaking on the extra edge brought by Ernst Middendorp’s involvement in the clash.

“That’s the conundrum, to be honest… Ernst knows our formation quite well, how the team plays. Although I have brought my own element to it – with a slight difference, I think.

“We need to continue believing in the structure and the formation. Tactically every game is different. Roles and responsibilities change. You see where the weaknesses are in the opposition, and you look to try and exploit that with structural changes in terms of the formation.”

Chiefs, on the other hand, are likely to miss the services of the talismanic Khama Billiat who picked up a knock.

The Zimbabwean international could, however, make an appearance on Saturday, as he was seen in training kit during the club’s media day held on Thursday.
