The big PSL clash of the weekend is the season’s first Tshwane Derby, where Supersport United and Mamelodi Sundowns slug it out at Lucas Moripe Stadium on Saturday.

Both sides were in action in different competition earlier in the week, with United splitting the points in the league with Bloemfontein Celtic, just after the PSL champions came out tops away to Equatorial Guinea outfit Leones Vegetarianos, winning 2-0 in the Caf Champions League.

The latter’s win came courtesy of goals fromm Jeremy Brockie and Themba Zwane, with the Kiwi striker netting his second in three matches – a welcome return, having struggled to find his scoring boots in almost a year at his new club.

What the players are saying

The 31-year-old, who joined the club from Matsatsansa in January, finally broke his duck against Free State Stars earlier this month, and is determined to keep the scoring momentum against his former club.

“I finally broke the duck and now the confidence is back,” he said.

“Every time I go on the pitch now I feel like I can get a goal. So, to start off with a goal in the Champions League qualifiers is a very good feeling.”

The two sides are separated by a single point, with the blue side of the city edging Ka Bo Yellow to take up fourth place, something which could give the derby an extra edge.

One player who is excited at the prospect of making his Tshwane Derby debut is Supersport United midfielder, Phumlani Ntshangase, who believes the clash is well on its way to reaching the heights of its Sowetan counterpart.

“I think it’s going there,” he told KickOff.

“As human beings we are all born at the age of zero and we grow. That’s how Chiefs and Pirates started and I think that’s where the Tshwane derby is going. It’s going to be big one day and we can be the generation that is taking it up step-by-step. One day is will be as big as the Derby between Chiefs and Pirates.”
