Mamelodi Sundowns will be looking to get back to winning ways as they prepare to host Free State Stars at Loftus Versfeld on Wednesday night.

The defending league champions are yet to reach the heights of last season in the current campaign and currently sit sixth on the PSL log with just three wins from eight, despite being the only unbeaten team remaining.

What the teams are saying

They are reeling from a shock defeat suffered at the hands of Baroka in the Telkom Knockout quarterfinals over the weekend, and have now shifted all their focus on defending their league title, as well as the looming CAF Champions League.

“We’ve got the league now‚ which is more important. We also have the Champions League‚ which starts in four weeks’ time‚, so we’ve got to focus on what is coming‚” coach Pitso Mosimane said after the Baroka defeat.

“You can’t have everything. The boys were texting each other while watching the Caf Champions League final last Friday saying that we should have been there and that’s the space we operate in‚ at an international level.”

Like their much-fancied opponents, Free State Stars have also failed to replicate the exploits of last season, where they were the surprise package in grabbing their first piece of silverware in 24 years, as well as finishing at a relatively high sixth position on the log.

Ea Lla Koto have just two wins to their name in the current campaign and have fallen on the first hurdle in both cup competitions that have so far commenced.

Speaking to KickOff, coach Luc Eymael emphasised the importance of picking up points at Loftus in the first match of what is set to be a tough run for Stars, with Supersport United and log leaders Orlando Pirates also on the horizon.

“We are bit disappointed not with the way we play, but disappointed with the matter of points collected. So we have to try to do our best to collect a point away. One would be a good thing at Sundowns, who didn’t lose at their pitch since a long, long, long time. So if we succeed to win three it would be a big, big, big performance.”

Mamelodi Sundowns vs Free State Stars: Head to head

The result in the last clash between these two sides was a one-all stalemate, which halted Mamelodi Sundowns’ ten-match winning streak over Free State Stars.

The Bethlehem-based outfit last tasted victory over the eight-time league champions in 2011, when Thabo Matlaba and Phumlani Mhamha found the net to give their side a 2-1 win at Peter Mokaba Stadium, with Nyasha Moshekwi scoring Sundowns only goal of the match.
