It will be a strangely eerie atmosphere in Moses Mabhida Stadium, where Kaizer Chiefs will be hosting Polokwane City behind closed doors.

Kaizer Chiefs have SIX players who have headed off to represent their countries in 2022 Soccer World Cup qualifiers this week as the race to reach Qatar for next year’s tournament heats up.

Kaizer Chiefs are back in action on Saturday as they prepare to face Polokwane City at an unusually quiet Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday.

The venue is usually a spot where the Soweto giants enjoy considerable home support, but they will have to do without it after the PSL sanctioned that they play three matches behind closed doors, following the crowd violence that occurred there after the Nedbank Cup semi-final in April.

It will be a stark contrast from their last outing where they played in front of a sellout crowd at Makhulong Stadium in the goalless draw against Highlands Park on Tuesday.

The midweek result meant an end to a three-match winning streak which saw them climb up to within touching distance of top spot in the PSL after starting their campaign without a win in their first five matches.

PSL team news

This sharp turnaround saw coach Giovanni Solinas scoop up the league’s Coach of the Month award for September, while star forward Khama Billiat got the outstanding player accolade for registering two goals and as many assists in the period.

Since joining Kaizer Chiefs in the offseason, the Zimbabwean international now has five goals and four assists in just 12 appearances across competitions.

Having joined from another giant in Mamelodi Sundowns, he spoke about his current home’s perceived decline as they are in their fourth season without hoisting a trophy.

“I think whatever happened before with the club doesn’t mean the club is not big anymore. The club is always big,” he said.

“The club has always been doing well, and we never lose respect for the club. What’s happening now, the club has done bigger before.”

Amakhosi are up against a club that has pulled off its fair bit of giant-killing so far this season, handing the table-topping Bidvest Wits a home defeat last month, despite finishing the game a player short.

The win took Polokwane City’s tally to three for the season, but they were unable to build on that at home in their next outing, as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Supersport United, the point taking them to sixth place on the log.

Kaizer Chiefs vs Polokwane City: Head to head

Polokwane City entered the top-flight in the 2013/14 season and have stayed up for six consecutive campaigns, despite one or two close shaves.

In this period, they have met Kaizer Chiefs ten times, and have only registered one win against their more fancied opponents, who have put them to the sword five times with the remaining four ending in draws.

However, Rise and Shine will draw a bit of confidence that a decent bulk of their current squad was present when they prevailed over Amakhosi in May 2017.

The last fixture between these two sides went the other way, with Chiefs grabbing a 2-1 win at home.
