Kaizer Chiefs have SIX players who have headed off to represent their countries in 2022 Soccer World Cup qualifiers this week as the race to reach Qatar for next year’s tournament heats up.

After some success on the road, Kaizer Chiefs return to more familiar territory as they host AmaZulu at FNB Stadium on Saturday.

Giovanni Solinas’ men collected maximum points in their last two matches, bagging six goals in the process to prop them up to fourth on the log.

Having endured a tough start to the season, their first win came courtesy of a convincing 4-1 win away to a ten-man Cape Town City and was followed by a 2-0 victory at Goble Park against Free State Stars.

Both victories came after the international break, and veteran striker Bernard Parker revealed that they used the brief hiatus to work on the mental aspect of things.

“There was a feeling of, ‘oh not again’ when the results were not coming. When we went into the Fifa break we went into it together and worked on the mental side,” he said.

“Also, we have enhanced the spirit within the team. We have been struggling for the past few seasons for consistency, which has been a big challenge for us.”

Kaizer Chiefs square up against a side that – in their last outing – came close to stunning defending PSL champions Mamelodi Sundowns once again, but had to settle for a point in a thrilling 3-3 draw at King Zwelithini Stadium last Sunday.

This was the second time in a row where AmaZulu had shipped three goals in the space of 90 minutes, as they suffered a 3-0 defeat to log leaders Bidvest Wits in the fixture prior to that, and coach Cavin Johnson has put more emphasis on defence going forward.

“You got to be on your toes all the time, and you got to stay focused for most of the time until it says 94 minutes, so you got to be on our toes,” he said.

“And that is something you cannot learn, it’s philosophy that is going to be embroidered in the team and it’s a culture that needs to awaken as far as individual players are concerned.”

Kaizer Chiefs vs AmaZulu: Head to head

Last season neither side managed to score in their two league encounters, as they both ended goalless.

However, Kaizer Chiefs have enjoyed complete dominance over AmaZulu, winning all six of their previous clashes before last season.

It’s been over a decade since Usuthu beat Amakhosi, the win coming way back in March 2007 when they came out 2-1 winners away from home.
