The two sides produced a thriller when they last met, and could add more fireworks this time around as well.

Cape Town City will want to forget the disappointment of their Nedbank Cup quarterfinal exit when they take on Golden Arrows at Cape Town Stadium on Wednesday night.

Benni McCarthy’s men have endured a tough second season in the top flight and the league presents their only, albeit outside, chance at silverware to go with last season’s Telkom Knockout triumph.

The Citizens are currently sixth on the log, having looked like genuine title contenders before losing all four of their February fixtures.

They did however bounce back the following month, in what is their most recent outing, beating Chippa United 2-0 at Athlone Stadium.

They come up against a Golden Arrows side who, after setting the pace early in the league campaign, find themselves dangerously close to the relegation zone at 12th place with just five wins to their name.

The last of those victories came against fellow strugglers, Ajax Cape Town towards the end of February.

Their last outing ended in defeat as they were reduced to ten men against Orlando Pirates, in rather peculiar fashion, thanks to a blunder by the referee who handed a second yellow to defender, Limbikani Mzava for a foul committed by teammate Mwandile Buthelezi.

Abafana Besthende have just five points to show for their efforts in the last six matches, and have scored seven goals in that period.

Head to head

The two sides have only met three times and, so far, it’s even stevens with each side claiming a win apiece, while their last encounter ended in a 2-2 draw.
