Defending PSL champions Mamelodi Sundowns resume their title defence on Saturday with a visit to Umlazi where they will take on AmaZulu at King Zwelithini Stadium.

Pitso Mosimane’s men come off a torrid week before the international break where they were knocked out of two cup competitions – first exiting the CAF Champions League in the group stage before getting knocked out by Cape Town City in the MTN8 semi-finals.

This means that the focus is now on their league campaign, and they will be looking to climb up from mid-table, having picked up one win in their three outings, with the other two ending in draws.

Team news

They go into Sunday’s clash slightly handicapped, with two key players unavailable in goalkeeper Dennis Onyango and forward Anthony Laffor who did duty for Uganda and Liberia respectively during the international break.

“Internationals Dennis Onyango and Anthony Laffor are definitely unavailable to travel to Durban, where The Brazilians first take on AmaZulu on Sunday, then Golden Arrows On Wednesday,” the club said in a statement.

“Laffor picked up a knee, calf and ankle injury on international duty for Liberia, while Onyango is away on a family commitment.”

For AmaZulu, there is some good news with a return to full fitness for Marc van Heerden and Sadate Ouro-Akoriko, who are both in line for a starting place.

Usuthu have won two and lost as many games in their four so far this season, as sit directly above Sundowns on the log at seventh place.

The most recent clash between these two sides was in the same venue, with Mamelodi Sundowns walking away 3-1 victors, not before conceding a home defeat themselves when they were stunned at Loftus Versfeld with AmaZulu winning 2-1.

Usuthu’s shock victory broke a streak of four defeats at the hands of the Brazilians, which includes a 7-1 thumping back in 2013.
