Australian legend Ellyse Perry heaped praise on the efforts of the Proteas Women who fell 19 runs short of winning the Women’s T20 World Cup.

It was a brilliant Sunday at Newlands as the two teams put on a great show. But ultimately it was Australia who proved to have too much in the tank as they throttled the batting efforts of the Proteas Women.

Beth Mooney’s half-century helped Australia set the target at 157 in front of an extraordinary loud and passionate Newlands crowd.

Proteas valiant in defeat

The Proteas Women started slowly before opener Laura Wolvaardt cut loose as she gave the home team something to get behind. Unfortunately, scoreboard pressure piled up and when Wolvaardt departed for 61 off 48 balls it was all but over.

‘Amazing game’ – Perry on epic Newlands final

“Amazing game, I want to say a huge thank you to the crowd for the atmosphere. I know it didn’t go well for them. But it was good to be a part of this,” said Perry on SuperSport.

“It was up and down in our bowling innings. Wolvaardt batted exceptionally well and her partnership with Chloe (Tryon) put them in it. It was tense till we broke that partnership.

“I think it is nice to contribute in the game. It is a thing you do as a team and it is more about effort than skill.”

It was Australia’s sixth win in eight attempts.
