Southampton 0-2 Liverpool

Liverpool breezed past lowly Southampton to go third in the Premier League table.

First half goals from Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah did the trick for Jurgen Klopp’s side.

The Egyptian set up the Brazilian on six minutes.

Firmino then finished well after a calamity at the back from Saints defender Wesley Hoedt.

The pair then reversed their roles when Firmino’s classy back-heel fell neatly into the path of Salah, who was in no mood to miss three minutes before half time.

The home side didn’t offer much after the break either.

And it was a fact noted by the majority of a capacity St Mary’s crowd.

Under-fire boss Mauricio Pellegrino was roundly booed for his second half substitutions.

For Klopp, it was a rare occasion to let his side ease down through the gears.

They also closed the gap on second-placed Manchester United to two points.

There’s a Champions League knockout test in Portugal against FC Porto to deal with in the week.

While the German’s stars continue to shine, the Saints are firmly in the gutter.

Newcastle 1-0 Manchester United

Jose Mourinho was outwitted by his old foe Rafa Benitez as Newcastle pulled off an amazing win over Manchester United.

Matt Ritchie’s second half strike proved enough as the Tynesiders clung on for a priceless three points in their battle to beat the drop.

It also gave Liverpool the opportunity to close the gap to United in second to two points.

Benitez’s side started much the brighter at a raucous St James’ Park.

Jonjo Shelvey and Kenedy both stung the palms of David De Gea, while Ayoze Perez snatched a shot wide from 18 yards out.

But United grew into the game, with Alexis Sanchez and Romelu Lukaku threatening to click in ominous fashion.

And new Toon keeper Martin Dubravka passed his first test on 39 minutes, parrying away a one-on-one effort from the advancing Anthony Martial.

The Slovakian stopper went on to have a top afternoon.

Dwight Gayle then had a huge penalty shout waved away by referee Craig Pawson.

The striker looked for all the world like he’d been felled by Chris Smalling but there was nothing doing.

The ref gained some favour back after the break, chalking off a Lukaku header after the Belgian’s blatant push.

Sanchez then took one step too many with the goal beckoning and Dubravka stricken on the turf.

And Ritchie made him pay by popping up with his first of the season.

Smalling was penalised for a dive, with the resulting free kick nodded by Perez into the path of the former Bournemouth man, who side-footed home on 65 minutes.

United were forced to push on and Anthony Martial was amazed to see two of his close-range shots blocked in as many seconds by Gayle.

But Newcastle battled harder than they have all season.

And Dubravka’s last-gasp save from substitute Michael Carrick sealed a great debut and a famous victory.

Huddersfield 4-1 Bournemouth

Huddersfield and Bournemouth kicked off the Premier League Sunday service in entertaining fashion at the John Smith’s Stadium.

The top flight minnows set the stage perfectly, ahead of Manchester United’s trip to Newcastle and Liverpool’s game away to Southampton.

It was a first half that couldn’t make it’s mind up.

Much like the Yorkshire weather, then, which veered from sunshine to blizzard and back again.

January signing Alex Pritchard eased the nerves around the John Smith’s Stadium with his seventh-minute opener.

Amid the frigid conditions, Junior Stanislas was coolness personified at the other end.

He did the business on 14 minutes, latching on to Ryan Fraser’s tasty cross and controlling neatly before slotting home past Jonas Lossl.

It was entertaining stuff and Steve Mounie put the Terriers back in front on 27 minutes with a controlled, close-range header.

The Frenchman had gone two month without a goal but had his second of the afternoon not long after half time.

Aaron Mooy teed the striker up and he made no mistake, finishing tidily from the edge of the box.

Rajiv van la Parra’s injury time penalty added the gloss, with Huddersfield ending their dismal run of form in style.
