Chelsea 2-1 Crystal Palace

Chelsea cruised to a first win in three as they made light work of Crystal Palace at Stamford Bridge.

Until second half injury time, that is.

A pair of first half goals threatened to open the floodgates, although three points proved far more desirable than fireworks.

In-form Willian made it five in five when he finished well on 25 minutes after making space.

One became two when Martin Kelly’s attempted clearance bounced off his own keeper Wayne Hennessey, back off Kelly again and into the back of the net.

Alexander Sorloth thought he’d pulled one back, only for referee Anthony Taylor to have blown a split-second before his shot due to a supposedly high foot from Jairo Riedewald.

And Patrick van Aanholt came back to haunt his old club when he scored from close range in the 90th minute.

But Roy Hodgson’s side had left themselves with too much to do.

Antonio Conte’s men stay fifth in the Premier League table, two points behind London rivals Tottenham in fourth.

Manchester United 2-1 Liverpool

A Marcus Rashford double helped Manchester United hold off Liverpool in the north west derby at Old Trafford.

The local boy did Jose Mourinho proud after being recalled to the starting XI for the early Premier League kick off.

Rashford lit the fuse on the rival clash in the 14th minute.

A muscular flick-on from Romelu Lukaku allowed Rashford to outfox the retreating Trent Alexander-Arnold and rifle in for the opener.

Virgil van Dijk missed a golden opportunity to test keeper David de Gea at the other end, fluffing his close-range header.

United’s route one approach led to Rashford’s second within seconds.

Van Dijk’s instinctive clearance fell at the feet of the 20-year-old, who steered past Loris Karius from the edge of the area.

It could have been three when Juan Mata was given the freedom of the Liverpool box to attempt an audacious scissor kick which flashed wide.

The Reds were handed a lifeline just after the hour mark.

Sadio Mane’s speculative cross from the left was shanked into his own net by Eric Bailly.

But chances were few and far between throughout a tetchy, disjointed second half.

Unusually invisible man Mohamed Salah produced a bigger cheer than Rashford’s goals in the 96th minute when he blazed Liverpool’s last chance well over.

And it was United who held on to strengthen their grip on second place in the EPL behind neighbours Manchester City.

Newcastle 3-0 Southampton

Newcastle took a big step towards EPL survival – and pushed hopeless Southampton closer towards the brink.

Kenedy took less than two minutes to notch his first Toon goal.

The Chelsea loanee spun on to a Jonjo Shelvey cross before finishing smartly from six yards out.

The Saints were rubbish and the winger doubled his tally on 29 minutes when he finished a counter attack.

Matt Ritchie increased the misery for beleaguered boss Mauricio Pellegrino with his 57th-minute effort.

West Brom 1-4 Leicester

Leicester breezed past the struggle of West Brom, who look dead-certs for relegation to the Championship.

It hadn’t started badly for Alan Pardew’s side as Salomon Rondon slid in to finish Oliver Burke’s cross after eight minutes.

Grzegorz Krychowiak’s deflected shot was then tipped onto the crossbar by Kasper Schmeichel as the Baggies threatened a real upset.

But Jamie Vardy soon put paid to that when he smashed into the bottom corner following an incisive through ball from Riyad Mahrez.

And Mahrez had one of his own after the break as normal, miserable service resumed at the Hawthorns.

Kelechi Iheanacho and Vicente Iborra ensured Pardew’s hosts would have no reprieve when they added goals three and four.

West Ham 0-3 Burnley

West Ham collapsed in a heap under the organised challenge of Burnley amid angry scenes at the London Stadium.

The Hammers had created all of the early chances but it was the visitors who thought they had snatched the lead after the break.

Ashley Barnes had the ball in the back of the next only to be denied by the offside flag.

He wasn’t to be stopped shortly after when he belted in emphatically from the edge of the box.

Chris Wood wasted little time in doubling the damage, turning in sharply three minutes later to leave David Moyes and his side shell shocked.

And Joe Hart had a disaster in the home goal when he coughed a regulation save straight into the path of Wood, who was never going to miss.

Everton 2-0 Brighton

Everton had to be patient in seeing off Brighton at Goodison Park.

The home side’s pressure finally told after half time when Gaetan Bong was unlucky to put through his own net while tackling Theo Walcott.

Cenk Tosun then whacked in off the bar to make it two.

And the red mist soon descended on Brighton’s Anthony Knockaert, who flung himself at Leighton Baines with two feet raised, minutes after the Toffees’ full back had whacked a ball into his face.

Referee Roger East made the easiest sending off of his career.

So comfortable was the margin that Wayne Rooney’s late penalty miss didn’t matter a jot.

Huddersfield 0-0 Swansea

Huddersfield huffed and puffed but couldn’t find a way through stubborn Swansea at the John Smith’s Stadium.

Jordan Ayew’s afternoon lasted ten minutes before he was sent off for a wild tackle on Jonathan Hogg.

The Terriers were well on top from there on and almost took the lead in dramatic fashion.

Steve Mounie unleashed a fierce strike that clattered away off the crossbar.
