Gameweek 24 came to a thrilling conclusion at St Mary’s, as Southampton and Tottenham Hotspur locked horns. After this round of EPL results, just Swansea and Liverpool are left to play on Monday night.

Spurs were in desperate need of a win on the South Coast, as every other top six team who played on Saturday picked up three points. Meanwhile, the Saints had slipped into the relegation zone following an alarming run of form. Here’s how the game panned out, in Sunday’s only Premier League fixture:

EPL Results, 21 January

Southampton 1-1 Tottenham Hotspur

The home side started brightly, and took the game to Spurs early on. They were rewarded – rather fortuitously – in the 15th minute, when Ryan Bertrand’s cross was diverted into the net by Tottenham defender Davinson Sanchez.

Spurs’ response was immediate, as they ploughed forward and Eric Dier saw his snap-shot cannon back off the post. The visitors soon won a corner, and Harry Kane rose highest to nod past Alex McCarthy in the Southampton goal.

Mohammed Sissoko then sliced wide from close range, before the Saints went within a whiker of regaining the lead. James Ward-Prowse’s free-kick perfectly picked out Jack Stephens, but his header whistled past the top corner.

The second half started at a more languid pace, but perked up when Dele Alli fizzed a shot inches wide of the post. Spurs continued to turn up the heat as Harry Kane’s shot was blocked just before it could whistle past the keeper.

Saints held firm right through to the end of the game, and might have even snatched it late on if young substitute Michael Obafemi made a clear connection with a ball flashed across the face of goal. Harry Kane dragged wide from a promising position in the 90th minute, before the referee blew for full time.

Southampton remain 18th, but now just one point away from safety. Spurs stay fifth, and a Liverpool win on Monday night would see them four points behind the EPL’s top four.
