Newcastle take on a second English Premier League season in 2018/19 after avoiding an immediate relegation back to the Championship.

That they did so owed much to the managerial wizardry of Rafael Benitez.

The Spaniard’s stock on Tyneside is as high as owner Mike Ashley’s is low.

Ever-unpopular owner Ashley just won’t go away, much as most Toon Army supporters wish he would.

They’d even settle for him loosening the purse-strings just an inch, with his consistent refusal to do so Benitez’s biggest bone of contention.

The ex-Liverpool boss somehow engineered a tenth-placed finish with most of his promoted squad still in place.

And another summer trawl of the bargain bucket has seen an eclectic mix of players head to the party capital in the north east of England.

Star of Japan’s World Cup campaign Yoshinori Muto joined from Mainz, while Spaniard Mikel Merino made a permanent move from Borussia Dortmund.

Slovakian goalkeeper Martin Dubravka made his loan move permanent from Sparta Prague.

Don’t forget Swiss defender Fabian Schar and South Korean midfielder Ki Sung-yueng while we’re at it.

And all of these united nations for under £10 million apiece.

Benitez will just have to pray his methods aren’t lost in translation, as is apparently the case with his infuriating owner.
