Manchester United face the daunting task of bridging the yawning gap to English Premier League rivals City in 2018/19.

The noisy neighbours in the north west won the EPL title by a whopping 19 points last season.

United were never seriously in the race under increasingly frustrated boss Jose Mourinho.

The irascible Portuguese is also entering his own managerial red zone with the Red Devils.

Year three is usually where it all goes pear-shaped for the Special One, if his spells at Real Madrid and twice with Chelsea are anything to go by.

A pre-season spent moaning his way around a tour of the USA hardly points at changing the habit of a lifetime.

But United have at least secured the transfer of midfielder Fred from Shakhtar Donetsk for a fee in excess of £50 million.

Diogo Dalot has also moved to Old Trafford from Mourinho’s old club FC Porto for nearly £20m, adding competition at full back.

They augment a squad boasting newly-crowned World Cup winner Paul Pogba.

It’s against their cross-city rivals that United and their ever-frustrated manager will be judged.

And don’t even think of reminding them that they haven’t won a Premier League title since 2013.
