Arsenal begin life without Arsene Wenger as the 2018/19 English Premier League season begins.

There is a Frenchman-shaped hole in the Emirates Stadium technical area after Wenger’s departure following more than two decades as manager.

His enormous boots have been filled by Unai Emery, who has the task of turning one of the world’s richest clubs back into EPL title contenders.

The Gunners haven’t won the league since their famous Invincibles went the whole campaign unbeaten in 2004.

Three FA Cup final wins in the last five years was about the only thing keeping Wenger going amid supporter unrest in north London.

Emery must reinvigorate an under-performing squad that has even tumbled out of the Champions League qualification reckoning in recent seasons.

Experienced defenders Steven Lichtsteiner and Sokratis Papastathopoulos joined from Juventus and Borussia Dortmund respectively ahead of the new campaign.

Gunners fans will be desperate for them to provide the base for Mesut Ozil and Aaron Ramsey to thrive in midfield.

Lucas Torreira also jetted in from Sampdoria to give further support in the middle of the park.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang takes on his first full Premier League season up front, joining fellow hotshot Alex Lacazette in the firepower department.

The top four stakes are growing ever harder, though.

It leaves Emery with a huge task on his hands as the first new Arsenal boss of many supporters’ lifetimes.
