Orlando Pirates have an opportunity to top the PSL log on Tuesday night as they travel to take on Polokwane City at Peter Mokaba Stadium.

The Buccaneers have already made two league appearances at the venue, winning on both occasions as they brushed aside Black Leopards, beating them 2-1, before edging Baroka with an identical scoreline.

They are currently second on the log, one point behind leaders Bidvest Wits and look to be hitting their stride after an indifferent start to their campaign, and will be on a high after their last league outing – the Soweto Derby win against fierce rivals Kaizer Chiefs.

Fresher in the Soweto giants’ minds will be their more recent cup victory away to AmaZulu, where they scored twice in extra time to win 3-1, booking their place in the semis, as they look to break a four-year trophy drought.

What the teams are saying

Having come agonisingly close to claiming silverware as they finished second behind Mamelodi Sundowns in the league, coach Milutin Sredojevic is determined to bring joy to the Buccaneers faithful in the second season of his second stint at the club.

“Football is played for supporters, we are serving them. Last season we healed their souls. This year we want to feed them,” the Serb said.

Orlando Pirates come up against a tricky opponent in Polokwane City who, like them, are unbeaten in their last seven league outings, and count the likes of Bidvest Wits and Kaizer Chiefs among the clubs they have snatched three points from.

Under the mentorship of Sredojevic’s countryman Jozef Vukusic, Rise and Shine find themselves in fourth position on the log, and could unseat the Buccaneers at second place should their burgle maximum points once more.

Polokwane City vs Orlando Pirates: Head to head

Neither team has managed outright dominance over the other in almost four years, as all league matches between these two sides in this period have ended in a stalemate.

Polokwane City have however tasted joy in Orlando Pirates’ expense in this period, as it took the intervention of the penalty shootout to see them through in last year’s edition of the Telkom Knockout.
