Home ground advantage for Pirates as they look to advance

Orlando Pirates v Polokwane City: Preview, head to head, starting XI, kick off and live stream

Orlando Pirates will have to quickly get over the disappointment of their midweek defeat to Mamelodi Sundowns as they look to advance to the final four of the Telkom Knockout when they host Polokwane United at Orlando Stadium on Saturday.

Another seasons without silverware will be seen as another failure for the Soweto giants and coach, Mulitin Sredojevic – now in his second stint with the club – will no doubt be wary of the club’s revolving door policy.

Form guide

It took a penalty shootout for the visitors to advance through to the quarterfinals, after 120 minutes of play against Ajax Cape Town did not produce a goal. Their last fixture in the league was also a draw against Kaizer Chiefs on Tuesday.

Orlando Pirates are still battling with finding the back of the net, with their forwards still firing blanks. It took them just one unanswered goal via Thabo Qalinge to go through against Golden Arrows on the weekend and they also found the net once, through Marc Van Heerden’s goal in their midweek league defeat. This brought their entire goal tally for the season to eight in 11 games.

Head to head

The last time Pirates managed to find the net twice in one game was in a league fixture against Polokwane City in September when Thamsanqa Gabuza’s brace spared them some blushes.

With the visitors relatively new to the top flight, Saturday will be only the second time these two sides clash in a cup encounter. It was in this very competition where Pirates knocked City out in the first round, winning 2-1 in 2014.

They have met nine times in the league with over half those matches ending in a stalemate. The Buccaneers have had the upperhand though, winning three of the games that produced a result, while the visitors have only won one game which came over three years ago in 2014.
