Maritzburg United and Mamelodi Sundowns clash two times in the space of four days, and the first of those fixtures is the Nedbank Cup semifinal encounter played at Harry Gwala Stadium on Sunday.

The visitors are eyeing a domestic double, as they pretty much have one hand on the league title, but will be wary of underestimating their opponents, who are currently enjoying one of their most successful seasons in the top flight, as they look set to finish third, while eyeing their first ever trophy.

Maritzburg have also made Harry Gwala Stadium tricky to navigate for visiting teams, aided by the partisan atmosphere caused by their ever-growing fanbase.

Form guide

The hosts eased past lower league outfits in the early stages of the competition, before coming up against Bloemfontein Celtic in the quarters.

Their most recent fixture was a 2-0 away win in the league against Baroka, as they bounced back from a disappointing run of two matches where they could only manage a single point, thanks to conceding late in the game on both occasions.

They come up against a side who have looked near impossible to stop, as they are currently on a seven-game winning streak in all domestic competitions, with a goalless draw against Rayon Sport from Rwanda in the CAF Champions League the only blight in their record.

Head to head

Maritzburg will relish the chance of knocking their opponents out of a cup competition for the second time running, having already done so in the MTN 8 early this season.

The Pretoria side did get some form of revenge though, as they triumphed when they met in league action in December last year.

Last season saw the two side fail to produce a result, after both league encounters ended in a draw, but prior to that it’s been all Sundowns, as they won all three matches before that.

Kick off

Kick off is at 15:00 (SAST).

TV and live stream

The game will be broadcast on Supersport 4, with the live build-up starting at 14:00.
