A rare all-PSL clash in the Nedbank Cup heads to Port Elizabeth as Chippa United host Mamelodi Sundowns at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Saturday.

The two sides have met in the same venue already this season, with the Brazilians edging the hosts for a 1-0 victory in league action in October last year.

However, cup action is a different ball game, and the men from the capital will know it all too well as their form in three other competitions is a far cry from their unbeaten league campaign.

Sundowns suffered a semifinal exit in the MTN8 cup, before crashing out in the Telkom Knockout quarterfinals, courtesy of eventual champions, Baroka.

They experienced an early hiccup in the Caf Champions League, where they lost their opening match of the group stage away to Lobi Stars of Nigeria.

Pitso Mosimane’s men will be wary of underestimating the unfancied Chilli Boys, who have previously ended their cup run – dumping them out of last season’s League Cup in the last eight.

One man who has noted the threat posed by the Eastern Cape-based outfit is goalkeeper, Dennis Onyango, who is well aware of how dangerous their opponents can be on their home turf.

“Chippa always play well when we face them there in East London or Port Elizabeth,” the Ugandan international told the media on Thursday.

The Chilli Boys have a new coach – the fourth one this season – in Clinton Larsen, who recently clinched his first win at his new club – beating fellow league strugglers, Maritzburg United.

The former Bafana midfielder shed light on how the constant changes in coaching staff negatively affected the players.

“I came to a club that has been changing coaches a lot. It didn’t sit well with the players, and I had to change the mood in the camp.”
