Mohamed Salah was left distraught as he watched on helplessly from the bench while Uruguay scored a last-gasp winner against Egypt. The first African game of the World Cup did not end well.

Egypt vs Uruguay: Mohamed Salah heartbroken

With a very well-documented history of dirty tricks against African teams, people across the continent were desperately hoping for Egypt and Salah to do everyone a favour.

That was not to be, though, as despite initial reports of his full recovery, the Liverpool forward was not able to make it off the bench.

The only real highlight of the first half came when Luis Suarez peeled away at the back post and shined an effort into the side netting. The stadium thought it had gone in, but it would not have counted anyway as the official raised his flag for offside.

Egypt surprised many as they pushed Uruguay to the limit throughout the rest of the game. Things opened up after the 70th minute as Egyptian goalkeeper El-Shenawy pulled off an incredible save to deny Suarez.

Uruguay continued to look dangerous an Edinson Cavani smashed a freekick into the post after the 80th minute.

With just under a minute to go before stoppage time, Uruguay took advantage of Carlos Sanchez corner as Giminez headed in.

The Uruguayans went ballistic but the camera quickly cut to Salah’s face on the bench. The Egyptian was in tears, he knew just how big that point would have been.
