At the time Adesanya had little to say about the premature callout but with Du Plessis now climbing the rankings he might just be a few wins away from earning a bout with the Lagos-born champion and after his last outing he had more to say about the Nigerian superstar.

Du Plessis further stoked the fires at UFC 285 when he called out Adesanya and Kumaru Usman for not being true African champions because they do not live on the continent.

He claimed that he would be ‘taking the title back to Africa’.

Adesanya refused to mention Du Plessis by name but it was clear that he was referring to the former EFC Middleweight champion in a stern warning.

The UFC MIddleweight champion said: “I wanna whoop his ass so bad. I want to do it in South Africa or Nigeria. He has to do some work. He has got to do something, show me something, so I can whoop that ass and I can show you history”.

Adesanya made it clear that Du Plessis needs a few more wins to be a credible challenger but also laid down the gauntlet for grudge match.

“I’ll remind you coz you gotta choose words wisely when you speak on people that have come before you. People who have paved the way for you”, said Adesanya. “If he does work and I pray to god he keeps winning. I will gladly drag his carcass across South Africa,” he added.
