Lions and Springboks hooker Malcolm Marx cleaned up at the SA Rugby Awards as he took home three awards including the coveted SA Rugby Player of the Year. He beat Bok teammates Eben Etzebeth, Siya Kolisi, Jaco Kriel and Jan Serfontein for the accolade.

The 23-year old had a fantastic season for both franchise and country and was rewarded with the SA Rugby Young Player of the Year and the Super Rugby Player of the Year to add to the biggest prize on the night.

Former Bok winger Ashwin Willemse was the last man to walk away with both the SA Rugby Player and Young Player of the Year award when he achieved the feat 15 years ago.

SA Rugby president Mark Alexander was full of praise and congratulated the young frontrower on his remarkable season.

“This is a magnificent achievement for Malcolm and on behalf of the entire South African rugby fraternity, I would like to congratulate him on a superb season,” he said.

“Malcolm was a rock for both the Springboks and the Lions and at only 23 I’m sure he will still go on to accomplish big things in our game.”

Another won who walked away with a prestigious prize was Blitzboks flyer Rosko Specman who was named Springboks Sevens Player of the Year while his coach, Neil Powel walked away with Coach of the Year with the Blitzboks named Team of the Year.

Junior Bok Juarno Augustus took over from Springbok winger Warrick Gelant as he was named World Rugby Under 20 Championship of the year while the latter also did not walk away empty-handed as he took home the Currie Cup Premier Division Player of the Year award.
