Who’d be a goalkeeper, right? Loris Karius was again at fault for a very soft goal on Tuesday night, as Liverpool continued their pre-season preparations.

The Reds travelled to Tranmere – a team in the neighbouring town of Birkenhead who were recently promoted to the fourth tier of English football – and won 3-2, thanks to goals from Adam Lallana, Rafael Camacho and Sheyi Ojo.

However, it would be Karius who hit the headlines for all the wrong reasons. A fizzing free-kick was hit straight at the ‘keeper, but he was unable to catch it. He fumbled it back into play, where Oliver Norburn gleefully tapped in the rebound.

The mistake gained further acrimony when one of the Tranmere players reacted to the mistake during the goal celebrations. Ben Tollitt, a boyhood Liverpool fan, appeared to verbally abuse Karius.

Will Jurgen Klopp stick with Loris Karius?

Of course, this howler comes off the back of two high-profile mistakes the Liverpool shot-stopper made in the Champions League final back in May. He threw the ball straight to Karim Benzema for Real Madrid’s first goal, before flapping at Gareth Bale’s tame shot and handing Los Blancos a 3-1 lead.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp defended his goalkeeper, saying the best that can happen from this is that his number one learns something from the error:

“We can’t always start a story after each mistake. But, it will happen, so let’s carry on and try and make the best of the situation and try to learn something.”

“This will probably happen for a while until he has a few fantastic games. That’s how it is. But we can’t change that, and our job is to perform.”
