The German league confirmed Friday that the 2020-21 Bundesliga season will start on September 18 with the traditional January winter break shrunk to a fortnight amid a string of changes forced by the coronavirus pandemic.

Motorsport

Daniel Ricciardo limped away in pain on Friday after crashing his Renault heavily during second free practice for this weekend’s Styrian Grand Prix. The 30-year-old Australian lost control of his car at Turn Nine and bumped backwards into the barriers, destroying much of the rear of his vehicle.

Lando Norris was handed a three-place grid penalty on Friday after ignoring yellow warning flags during opening free practice at the Styrian Grand Prix.

Sergio Perez topped the times in Racing Point’s ‘pink Mercedes’ in Friday’s Styrian Grand Prix opening free practice, the Mexican out-pacing Max Verstappen of Red Bull by 0.096 seconds.

Formula One on Friday added two more confirmed races to its coronavirus-hit season at Mugello in Italy and Sochi in Russia. The Mugello race, to mark Ferrari’s 1000th Grand Prix and to be known as the Grand Prix of Tuscany, is at the Italian team’s test track and will be held on September 13, immediately after the Belgian and Italian Grands Prix.

The US round of the MotoGP championship, scheduled for Austin, Texas has been cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic, the International Motorcycling Federation (FIM) announced on Friday.

Tennis

Women’s tennis officials are still hopeful of holding tournaments in China this year, despite authorities calling off most international sports events in 2020 because of the coronavirus.

The men’s singles seedings will revert to the world rankings at next year’s Wimbledon, after almost two decades of being based on grass-court form, organisers announced on Friday.

Cricket

All 18 first-class counties have agreed to take part in a shortened red-ball tournament during the truncated domestic season, England cricket bosses announced on Friday.

England stand-in captain Ben Stokes took the key wicket of Kraigg Brathwaite to leave the first Test against the West Indies at Southampton finely balanced on Friday. West Indies were 159-3 at lunch on the third day, just 45 runs adrift of England’s first innings 204 all out. Shamarh Brooks (27 not out) and Roston Chase, unbeaten on 13, were at the crease after Brathwaite fall lbw to Stokes for a well-made 65. 

England paceman Stuart Broad said he felt frustrated and angry at having “my shirt” taken away after he was dropped for the first Test against the West Indies at Southampton.

The South African Cricketers’ Association (SACA) has come out in support of Lungi Ngidi’s stance on Black Lives Matter.

Rugby

The Melbourne Rebels and Queensland Reds played out a tense 18-18 draw Friday after the first-ever golden point extra-time in Australian Super Rugby failed to separate the sides.

PRO14 CEO Martin Anayi told Welsh reporters greater South African participation in the competition would be welcomed on Thursday.
