Becoming parents is a huge adjustment for everyone, but especially so for elite/professional athletes who are used to focusing full-time on their training.

The 38-year-old Gqeherha-born Kyle Buckingham has spoken about the birth of his son and how it has changed him, especially with Father’s Day coming up on Sunday, 20 June.

“The best gift in my life was given to us on the 4/5/21 when we welcomed our baby boy, Chase Buckingham into the world. It’s definitely given me a different kind of love that I’ve never experienced before,” Buckingham said.

“It’s been the most incredible time in our lives having this little boy in our home and part of our family, I can’t even keep my eyes off him.

“It’s also given me a different outlook in life already, as it’s not going to be just me fighting every day in my training as a professional athlete for myself but now for my little man!

“It’s definitely going to change the dynamics a bit with recovery and my everyday training, but we will make it work as Lauren and I have always made a plan.

“This will be my first ever Father’s Day, and I couldn’t be more excited about it. Lauren had her very special first Mother’s Day just five days after Chase was born, so it was super special.”

Buckingham will be heading off to the United Kingdom for Ironman Bolton on 4 July as his next race. It will be his first full distance Ironman competition since prior to Covid-19.
