Under-fire Kaizer Chiefs coach Giovanni Solinas has received backing from none other than club owner Kaizer Motaung.

The Glamour Boys’ record under the Italian coach reads a sorry tale, as they are yet to get going this season, boasting a solitary win in eight outings in all competitions so far.

However, Motaung has expressed his confidence in the man brought in to replace Steve Komphela before the start of the campaign.

“It’s not a continuation. You have to bear in mind that the coach came in and didn’t have a pre-season with the team,” he said.

“So, he just came in, and unfortunately the problem we had in August was (that fixtures were) very tight, as you can see we’re trying to use the dates as early as we can because there’s going to be a congestion as we go forward, especially due to the CAF competitions.

“But I’m not very much concerned at the moment. I mean, the coach needs to be given a chance. He did not start the season like all other coaches that had a pre-season and was able to put their systems in place.”

Solinas kicked off his tenure at the Soweto giants with a promising away draw against defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns, which was followed by a crushing 3-1 home defeat at the hands of Bidvest Wits.

A convincing 3-0 win in the MTN8 quarterfinals against his former side Free State Stars might have given the impression that the club had turned the tide, but it was followed by a spate of draws which see them languishing in the bottom half of the PSL log.

Kaizer Chiefs will be looking to bounce back when they visit the Mother City for their next fixture against Cape Town City on Saturday, 15 September.
