Kaizer Chiefs: The five most expensive players at Naturena

There have been plenty of comings and goings in the Kaizer Chiefs squad through the last two transfer windows as Ernst Middendorp has overhauled the group.

What there haven’t been are big-money signings like the deal that brought Khama Billiat to the club.

Here we look at the five most expensive players in the Kaizer Chiefs squad as rated by Transfrmarkt.

5 – Daniel Akpeyi – goalkeeper: R12 million

The Nigerian keeper originally signed as cover for Itumeleng Khune has established himself as the first choice in the Amakhosi goal and was also favoured as the Super Eagles stopper at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations.

He joined Kaizer Chiefs in January 2019 from Chippa United for a fee in the region of R11,3-million having first come to South Africa in 2015 when he joined the Nelson Mandela Bay outfit from Warri Wolves.

4 – George Maluleka – midfielder – R13 million

Maluleka may be moving towards the twilight of his career but it would still take a hefty sum to spring him from Kaizer Chiefs. The 31-year-old has given his best years to the club and was rewarded with a contract extension in January 2020.

The former Supersport United and Ajax Cape Town man has played regularly for Chiefs this season contributing four assists in his 17 league appearances.

3 – Daniel Cardoso: defender – R14.5 million

Cardoso did not enjoy the best 2018/19 season but has repaid the faith shown in him by coach Middendorp with top-class displays in Kaizer Chiefs great start to the Premiership.

The lanky defender with dual South African and Portuguese citizenship was granted an extension to his existing contract and should remain a part of Chiefs lineup next season.

2 – Itumeleng Khune: goalkeeper – R16 million

Khune may not be at the peak of his potential anymore but he remains the second-highest valued player in the Chiefs squad despite barely playing this term.

The inspirational skipper made his return to first team action in the Nedbank Cup round of 32 win over Royal Eagles and he is still very popular with most fans.

Signed for a club record fee from Sundowns in 2018 Billiat, who as a permanent resident of South Africs, does not have to register as a foreign player remains Chiefs most valuable asset on paper.

Billiat is working his way back to full fitness and sharpness but Middendorp appears eager to keep the Zimbabwean star around
