Jaguares hooker Santiago Socino has been cited for stamping following his side’s 33-19 loss to the Sharks in Durban.

Socino was deemed to have deliberately stamped on Sharks hooker Craig Burden’s head in the 81st minute of the Super Rugby match. The citing commissioner reviewed the incident and found that it reached the threshold of a red card offence.

His case will be heard via video conference at midnight on Monday 9 March.

Socino tramps on Burden’s head

“Santiago Socino of the Jaguares has been cited for alleged foul play during a Super Rugby match at the weekend,” a statement released by SANZAAR Judicial reads.

“Socino is alleged to have contravened Law 9.12: Stamping or Trampling, in the 80th minute of the match between the Sharks and Jaguares at Jonsson Kings Park in Durban on 7 March 2020.

“Upon further review of the match footage, the Citing Commissioner deemed in his opinion the incident had met the Red Card threshold for foul play.

“The Case is to be considered in the first instance by the SANZAAR Foul Play Review Committee which will take place on Monday 9 March 2020, 7am(ARG), 12pm(SA), 9pm(AU), 11pm(NZ) via video-conference.

“All SANZAAR disciplinary matters are in the first instance referred to the Foul Play Review Committee to provide the option of expediting the judicial process.

“For a matter to be dispensed with at this hearing, the person appearing must plead guilty and accept the penalty offered by the Foul Play Review Committee.”

The Jaguares remain third in the South African conference with the Lions losing again while the Bulls produced their first win of the season to lift themselves off the foot of the table.

Sean Everitt’s Sharks team top the South African conference and the overall log although their closest rivals all have a game in hand on them.

Lomax also cited

Socino was the second player to be cited over the weekend following the Hurricanes’ Tyrell Lomax’s red card against the Blues.

The Hurricanes have been plagued by ill-discipline this season, seeing four players sin-binned along with the sending off of Lomax.

Former Rebels prop Lomax has been a dominant force in the Hurricanes scrum but could be set for a spell on the sidelines after connecting with a shoulder shot to the head of Stephen Perofeta.

Lomax’s case will also be heard by the SANZAAR Foul Play Review Committee on Monday 9 March.
