It will be the 160th running of the prestigious weight for age race with a prize fund of R2 million on offer.

A field of 11 runners will take to the stalls, headed by the ‘people’s horse’ and 2021 Durban July winner Kommetdieding, who will bid to become the first since Mike de Kock’s filly Igugu (2012) to record consecutive Durban July-Met wins.

Kommetdieding, trained by Michelle Rix, will jump from ‘pole position‘ after owner Ashwin Reynolds drew Gate 1 at the barrier draw.

Likely challengers to Kommetdieding are Justin Snaith’s Jet Dark who won the L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate on 8 January on the same racecourse, but over 1 600m.

Jet Dark will enter Gate 9.

Snaith holds a commanding hand in the race with no fewer than four runners.

In addition to Jet Dark, Snaith will send Double Superlative (gate 3), Hoedspruit (gate 4) and Do It Again (gate 11) to the stalls.

So who should you be betting on to win?

If you still have a few rands to spare, consider having a look at – and a flutter on – the odds quoted by leading SA bookmakers, Hollywoodbets.

At the time of publishing, Kommetdieding is the listed favourite at 33/10, followed by Jet Dark (7/2).

Double Superlative (4/1) is next best with Linebacker at 5/1.

Marina’s odds have been slashed from an opening 10/1 to 6/1 making the only filly in the race the biggest mover heading into the race.

Do It Again and Hoedspruit both quoted at 10/1.

Second Base (25/1), Puerto Manzano and Cirillo (both 50/1), and Rockin’ Ringo (66/1) are considered outsiders for victory.

The Cape Town Met, the ninth race of 12 on the day, is due to start at 17:10.
