Heyneke Meyer has decided to walk away from the national coaching job.

The Bok coach has announced his desire to not have his contract renewed. Supersport.com first reported the news and it was confirmed by South African rugby soon after.  His contract was due to run out on 31 December 2015 and the South African Rugby Union’s (SARU) general council was set to discuss his future at their meeting next week.

After the Boks finished third at this year’s Rugby World Cup, Meyer suggested that he would like to carry on to “make a difference”, but he has now done a 180.

Supersport.com reports that “the public outcry, some of the vitriol directed at him and his family and the comments made by various rugby personalities about his coaching caused him to rethink.”

The council will steel meet next week, but will now have to decide on a new coach. Allister Coetzee currently seems t be the front-runner for the job.
