Manchester United defender Harry Maguire’s comical defending led to Sevilla’s opening goal in the second leg of the Europa League quarter-final on Thursday night.

The United captain carelessly gave the ball away just outside his own box to allow the home team to take the lead in the early stages of the game.

Maguire’s mistake proved costly as the Red Devils were handed a 3-0 defeat at the Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán Stadium.

Harry Maguire became the world’s most expensive defender after he signed for Manchester United in 2019 for 80 million pounds but his stay at the club has been less than fruitful. The 30-year-old England international has continued to make disastrous errors that has led to costly goals.

Last week, he scored an own goal in the first leg late on at Old Trafford to hand Sevilla an advantage after the match finished 2-2 at Old Trafford. Lisandro Martinez’s injury forced Erik Ten Hag to make changes at the back and had no other option but to select Maguire to lead the backline.

Having been eliminated from the Europa League, United now turn focus to the FA Cup as they face a fully-rested Brighton at Wembley on Sunday. Under Ten Hag, United have been impressive managing to win the Carabao Cup this season but lately the team’s form has been poor.
