South Africa’s Erik van Rooyen has finally said sorry for his shocking temper tantrum in the second round of the PGA Championship at Kiawah Island last Friday.

Van Rooyen was on his way to making the halfway cut – until an embarrassingly spectacular outburst.
With just five holes left in his second round, the usually mild-mannered Van Rooyen sat at two-over par, three strokes inside the cut line.
But then came the final five holes that some have labeled the toughest finishing stretch in golf.

Erik van Rooyen followed a bogey at the 14th with a double at 15. Another bogey at 16 put him at six-over, one shot out of the cut line.
He then put his tee shot on the par-3 17th into the water and, well, let’s just say the 31-year-old wasn’t very happy!
Erik van Rooyen took not one, but TWO swipes at obliterating a tee marker, sending spectators and a caddie ducking for cover, especially as the head of his club dangerously broke off.

Erik van Rooyen would go on to triple the 17th before finishing with a par at the 18th hole, which saw him sign for a nine-over par 81 – and pack his bags.
No doubt a fine – and rightly so – awaits the South African.

It took Van Rooyen nearly a WEEK to apologise on social media for his action.

Those commenting weren’t so forgiving, questioning whether he’d said sorry face-to-face or picked up the phone to his playing partners and their caddies he narrowly missed doing serious harm to.
