The 25-year-old Texan world No 1 claimed his first major title on Sunday at the 86th Masters at Augusta National, earning the famed green jacket and a cool $2.7 million for his three-shot victory over runner-up Rory McIlroy, who took home $1.62 million.

The 2022 Masters purse was set at a record $15 million, paying out a total of $3.5 million more than it has in any prior edition of the tournament.

Incredibly, the $2.7 million Scheffler won is the same total purse that was paid out to the entire Masters field when Tiger Woods won his first green jacket 25 years ago in 1997.

In total 52 players made the 4-over par halfway cut from the 91 who were scheduled to start.

Of those to start the tournament, five were South Africans.

Unfortunately, only Charl Schwartzel (T10) and Christiaan Bezuidenhout (T44) made the weekend.

Schwartzel earned $390 000 (R5.7 million) while Bezuidenhout pocketed $51 000 (R744 000).

Schwartzel, who won the Masters in 2011, did have a memorable moment on the 10th hole during Saturday’s third round where he holed his second shot for an eagle two.

All professionals that failed to make the cut – which included Erik van Rooyen, Garrick Higgo and Louis Oosthuizen (who withdraw ahead of the second round) – earned $10 000 (R146 000).

For the record, Tiger Woods finished 47th on 13-over par and won $43 500 (R635 000), taking his career prize money to $120 895 206 (R1.77 billion) – which of course pales in comparison to his off-course earnings.
