Max Verstappen won a chaotic but thrilling German Grand Prix in the rain on Sunday after both Mercedes spun and Lewis Hamilton endured a disastrous pit stop.

Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel finished in second from 20th place on the grid while Danil Kvyat scored Torro Rosso first ever podium finish in third place.

The race was marked by a number of incidents and accidents and saw World Championship leader Hamilton finish 11th.

A wet race was always going to prove a challenge and small mistakes proved costly for drivers. Carlos Sainz was the first to suffer a major drama as he spun out on the 19th lap.

There was drama on the track and in the pitlane with Albon nearly sliding into Norris in the wet.

Halfway through the race, Hamilton spun off from the lead damaging his front wing and earning himself a five-second penalty for an incorrect pit lane entry. With his pit crew unaware he was coming in the Championship leader was stuck in the pit lane for a minute.

The only thing missing from Hamilton’s pit stop was the Benny Hill theme tune.

Hamilton had a day to forget as he spun again in trying to make up places.

With Bottas in the lead, he too spun off but his collision with the barrier proved to be the end of his race.

Endless incidents at the German Grand Prix

Some of the incidents were down to the weather but others were inexplicable like Pierre Gasly driving into the back of the Torro Rosso of Albon.

It looked like Nico Hulkenberg might get on the podium for Renault but he would go out in the same spot as Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc.

Leclerc had earlier collided with Romain Grosjean in the pit lane.

Even race winner Verstappen lost control of his car at some point but he was fortunate not to suffer any damage.

Verstappen’s win was well received and the German Grand Prix has been labelled as the most exciting race this year.
