Remember that “aww” moment from the Olympics when Francois Hougaard gave his bronze medal to Seabelo Senatla?

In case you missed it, the story goes like this: Hougaard only played on the final day at the Sevens after Senatla got injured. Senatla is a stalwart of the Sevens side and played in all the group games. South Africa won bronze, but only players who feature in the medal matches actually get a medal.

Hougaard didn’t think this was fair. So he insisted Senatla takes his medal. It was super awesome.

Now, with a bit of hustling, Hougaard has received his own medal.

The medal was given to Hougaard as the Springboks left for the Rugby Championship in Brisbane and Christchurch ad handed over to him by fellow Sevens bronze medallist, Juan de Jongh.

It was a complete surprise for Hougie, who said:

“This is a wonderful surprise and something I really didn’t expect.

“When I gave the medal the Seabelo, I felt he deserved it more than I did, and I still feel so, but having played a part in Rio, I’m very grateful to have received this medal and I would like to thank everyone involved in making it possible. It’s something I will cherish for many years as one of the best moments of my rugby career.”
