Netherlands and Ajax Defender Mathijs De Ligt is fast becoming Europe’s most wanted man with the richest clubs on the continent chasing his signature.

Juventus showed they were not above a little bit of ambush marketing as their star striker Cristiano Ronaldo urged De Ligt to make the move to Turin, immediately after Portugal won the Nations League.

A bewildered De Ligt admitted he did not know how to respond to the bizarre, real-life pop-up ad and says he just laughed.

The big Dutch defender has shown himself to be tremendously mobile and a goal threat from set pieces, due to his string aerial game. His game sense is incredibly well-developed for someone so young but that didn’t aid him in interpreting what Ronaldo said to him. When asked if Ronaldo had proposed he join Juve, De Ligt could only say that he thinks that was the gist of it.

“That could be true, yes. I didn’t understand him at first. I was a little shocked, so I laughed, but I didn’t say anything,” De Ligt was quoted by AS.

“Shortly after the game you are not at all concerned with it, you are disappointed you have lost and that is the only thing you are thinking about.”

The defender has been heavily linked with moves to Paris Saint Germain and Barcelona, who have already swooped for Ajax prospect Frenkie De Jong, with the French team reportedly offering De Ligt the biggest payday.

De Ligt revealed that he will go on holiday before making a decision on his future.

“I will first go on a nice vacation and rest. I will let it happen and then I will see.”

Liverpool fans have expressed a desire for De Ligt to link up with Dutch teammate Virgil van Dijk at the heart of their defense but the club themselves don’t appear keen for a duel with Europe’s deepest pockets.
