Daryl Impey gets the nod for Tour de France 2022

South African cyclist Daryl Impey has been named in Israel Premier-Tech’s team for next month’s Tour de France.

Veteran South African cyclist Daryl Impey was on Wedneday named in Israel Premier-Tech’s team for next month’s Tour de France.

Impey, who will turn 38 in December this year, will form part of a strong eight-man line-up for the Israel-based team for the 109th edition of the famed race.

In 2013 Impey memorably became the first South African rider to wear the yellow jersey at the Tour de France, doing so for two days.

Six years later he won his first individual stage at the race, winning Stage 9 in Brioude.

Impey has previously represented a number of other teams, including Barloworld, Radioshack, MTN-Qhubeka, Team NetApp and GreenEDGE.

He joined the Israel Premier-Tech team in 2021 on a two-year contract.

This year’s race will be Impey’s ninth Tour de France having first taken part in 2012.

He has a best finish of 38th overall in 2016.

Impey will ride alongside, among others, four-time winner Chris Froome as well as Michael Woods and Jakob Fuglsang in a well-rounded line-up.

The 2022 Tour de France will start on The 2022 Tour de France will start with a 13km individual time trial in Copenhagen and will conclude some 3 328km later on the Champs-Elysees in Paris on Sunday, 24 July.

At the time of publishing Impey is the second confirmed South African in the race along with Reinardt Janse van Rensburg who was named in the Lotto Soudal line-up.

Although unconfirmed, South Africa is likely to have a third rider this year in Louis Meintjes representing the Intermarché-Wanty-Gobert Matériaux team.
