South African wicketkeeper-batsman Quinton de Kock sensationally announced his retirement from Test cricket with immediate effect on Thursday.

The shock announcement from De Kock, 29, came just hours after he was part of the Proteas team beaten by 113 runs in the first Test against India at SuperSport Park in Centurion.

De Kock said he remained committed to playing international limited overs cricket.

De Kock was regarded as one of the most talented wicketkeeper-batsmen in the world. 

He scored 3 300 runs at an average of 38.82 in 54 Tests, scoring at a rate of more than 70 runs per 100 balls. He took 221 catches and made 11 stumpings.

1. Quinton de Kock was born on 17 December 1992 in Johannesburg and attended King Edward VII High School (KES), the alma mater of former national skipper Graeme Smith.

2. He made him Test debut (cap #317) against Australia in now Gqeberha on February 20, 2014, making seven and 34 in a match the Proteas won by 231 runs.

3. De Kock has played 54 Tests, 124 ODIs and 61 T20Is for South Africa.

4. He has scored 3 300 (average: 38.82), 5 355 (average: 45.38) and 1 827 (average: 33.83) runs in Tests, ODIs and T20Is, respectively, for a total of 10 482 runs across all three formats.

5. He has six Test hundreds, 16 in ODIs and is still searching for his first ton in T20Is.

6. De Kock has taken 221 Test catches, 170 in ODIs and 49 in T20Is to date, along with 11, 9 and 15 stumpings, respectively.

7. He holds a number of records and milestones, including among other: Fastest wicketkeeper in terms of matches (35) to take 150 Test dismissals, and fastest South African to score a T20I half century (17 balls).

8. He has played for four Indian Premier League teams, namely Sunrisers Hyderabad, Delhi Daredevils, Royal Challengers Bangalore and since 2019, the Mumbai Indians.

9. Quinton de Kock married Sasha Hurly in September 2015. The couple are expecting their first child in early 2022.
