Heading into Sunday’s decisive third T20, many people were still talking about the immense potential of young star Tristan Stubbs, who delivered an unforgettable batting performance in the opening game of the series.

Stubbs has produced two brief knocks since then, without having time to build a big innings again, but on Sunday he stole headlines for different reasons.

In what was an incredible effort, Stubbs pulled off a sensational catch that would have made former Proteas legend Jonty Rhodes proud.

Diving to his left at full-stretch, the 21-year-old plucked the ball out of the air as South Africa powered towards victory.

Just last Wednesday a thrilling first international innings by Stubbs was just not enough for the Proteas as they slipped to a 41-run defeat in the opening T20 International of their three-match series.

Stubbs had made his international debut against India in the previous T20I series in the subcontinent, but did not get to bat in the two games he played.

In the first T20 against England, though, he had time on his hands to build an innings, while showing remarkable boundary-hitting ability as he clubbed eight sixes and two fours in an electrifying 72 off only 28 balls.

Along the way he recorded the second quickest T20I half century ever for South Africa, but eventually perished with the run-rate sky-rocketing, leading to the Proteas finishing on 193 for eight.

At just 21 years of age, Stubbs has now officially announced himself at the highest level, while teenage superstar Dewald Brevis is expected to soon also make his way onto the international stage.

In the recently-concluded Indian Premier League, there were 33 South Africans among a total of 590 players up for sale at the two-day IPL auction, and young Brevis – who has been likened to Proteas legend AB de Villiers – was picked up by Mumbai, who paid 3 Indian crore for the 18-year-old, which is just over R6 million.

He ultimately went on to play seven IPL matches and scored 161 runs in seven innings as he very quickly showed what potential he possesses.

Brevis also captured the limelight during the U19 World Cup this year where he amassed 506 runs in six matches for South Africa in the competition, ultimately recording two centuries and three fifties. There is no doubt that Stubbs and Brevis could become integral members of the Proteas team for many years to come, and this point was emphatically made by former Proteas legend Dale Steyn.

Taking to Twitter, he commented: “Stubbs, Brevis. Next 10 plus years the world will be entertained.”
