England have been playing a stunning brand of Test cricket in recent times, and looked well on their way to a comfortable series win over New Zealand after declaring on 435 in the first innings.

The visitors then bowled New Zealand out for 209 and forced them to follow on. At that point, comfortable victory in the second Test was expected to be just a matter of time for England.

However, a superb century from Kane Williamson helped the Kiwis reach 483, setting England a target of 258 to win.

The series was ultimately drawn level at 1-1

After the match, England captain Ben Stokes paid credit to everyone involved in an enthralling Test match.

“That game is what Test cricket is about, the emotions we were going through and the Kiwi boys as well. Everyone’s got their money’s worth today… Disappointing to end on a loss but four out of five away from home is something we will take great pride in. We have a few months off and then we can get back to what we love doing.”

Williamson was named Man of the Match.

“It doesn’t quite feel right to be standing here, after a game of cricket like that and the contributions we’ve seen from both teams throughout. A fantastic game of cricket to be a part of and, for us as a team, we’ve been fighting away in the Test format for a while so it’s nice to get across the line on this one.

“This England team is playing incredible cricket at the moment and we’re up against it, coming into this game. So to fight away and compete and ultimately just get across the line is, is a really nice feeling.”
