Sri Lanka beat Bangladesh to top pool at Women’s T20 World Cup

Sri Lanka have beaten Bangladesh by 7 wickets in Cape Town to remain unbeaten in the Women’s T20 World Cup and top their pool.

Sri Lanka have beaten Bangladesh by 7 wickets in Cape Town to remain unbeaten in the Women’s T20 World Cup and top their pool.

Bangladesh won the toss and opted to bat first continuing the trend of winning the toss and losing the game.

Bangladesh hit 126/8

With no one scoring more than 30 runs Bangladesh were forced to bat deep. Sobhana Mostary top scored with 29 off 32 deliveries. Nigar Sultana Joty contributed with 28 off 34 and opener Shamima Sultana was the only managed 20 off 13. Bangladesh battered out their 20 overs to set Sri Lanka a target of 127.

Oshadhi Ranasinghe picked up three wickets for 23 runs. Chamari Athapaththu was economical taking 2/19 and Inoka Ranaweera got 1/18. The fielders took the remaining two wickets via run outs.

Sri Lanka, partnerships are key in Women’s T20 World Cup

Player of the Match, opener Harshitha Samarawickrama scored an unbeaten 69* off 50 balls with eight 4’s and one 6. Her unbeaten 104 run partnership with Nilakshi Silva who scored 41* of 38 saw Sri Lanka over the line. Final score 129/3 in 18.2 overs to win by 7 wickets and top the standings at this stage.

All three wickets were taken by Marufa Akter who in her four overs (one maiden!) took 3/23 and was certainly the pick of the bowlers.

What next?

Both teams are traveling to Gqeberha for their next matches of the tournament to take on defending champions Australia. Bangladesh on Tuesday, 14 February at 19:00. Sri Lanka on Thursday 16 February at 15:00.
