Bangladesh are a different animal to what they were just a few years ago. Can Ottis Gibson avoid a banana skin in his first game as Proteas coach?

In years gone by, many would have seen a home fixture against Bangladesh as the perfect introduction for a new South Africa coach.

The times, they are a-changing, however: Bangladesh’s recent renaissance has seen them beat both England and Australia for the first time, and they will be travelling over with an unparalleled confidence no other Bangladeshi team has had before.

Ottis Gibson begins his reign as the new Proteas coach tomorrow in Potchefstroom. He has the luxury of picking a batting line-up that hit form in the domestic game last week: Hashim Amla, Dean Elgar, Theunis de Bruyn and new lad Aiden Markram all scored centuries. Skipper Faf du Plessis made 96 and Quinton de Kock hit a half-century.

The deal is even sweeter for Gibson given that Bangladesh’s formidable all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan has pulled an AB de Villiers and withdrawn from the Test squad for ‘a rest’.

Bangladesh have won the toss, will bowl first…

Team News

South Africa: The Proteas are still without Vernon Philander, who is struggling to put his injury woes behind him. Andile Phehlukwayo and Aiden Makram make their Test debuts.

Bangladesh: As mentioned, there is no Shakib Al Hasan for the visitors. Two young bowlers, left-arm quickie Mustafizur Rahman, 22, and off-spinner Mehidy Hasan, 19, take their place in the line up.
