South Africa ignite Women’s T20 World Cup beating New Zealand

South Africa bowled New Zealand over and out in Paarl to keep their Women’s T20 World Cup dream alive, winning by 65 runs.

South Africa bowled New Zealand over and out in Paarl to keep their Women’s T20 World Cup dream alive, winning by 65 runs.

South Africa won the toss and opted to bat first continuing to break the trend of winning the toss and losing the game.

South Africa set 132/6

South Africa struggled upfront losing wickets early but Chloe Tryon dropped anchor and steadied the ship. She made 40 off 34 and built a substantial partnership with Nadine de Klerk who finished with an unbeaten 28 off 26 deliveries. South Africa ended their innings with 132/6 in this Women’s T20 World Cup.

Eden Carson took 2 for 23 runs for New Zealand. Lea Tahuhu picked up 2/27 and Hayley Jensen got 1/13. The fielders also got into the action dislodging the bails with a runout.

New Zealand getting its ducks in a row

For the second game in a row, New Zealand’s openers have gone for ducks. Sophie Devine, traditionally an opener came in lower down the order and top-scored with 16 off 26. Jess Kerr with 11 from 13 balls and Amelia Kerr with 10 off 12 deliveries were the only other players to crack double figures. New Zealand was 67 all out.

South Africa’s bowlers came out firing. Wickets and records falling. Nonkululeko Mlaba set the tone with 3/10. Player of the Match, Chloe Tryon followed up her batting with 2/12 with the ball. Marizanne Kapp took 2/13 and Ayabonga Khaka got 1/9 and a wonderful runout.

Shabnim Ismail, who has consistently been the second fastest female bowler in the world, bowled her record-breaking seventh maiden over in Women’s T20 World Cups and ended the innings with 1/7.

New Zealand travels to Cape Town to take on Bangladesh on Friday, 17 November at 15:00. The hosts, South Africa move to Gqeberha to face current title holders, Australia on Saturday, 18 February at 19:00.
