On Saturday it was confirmed that the SA20 final between Pretoria Capitals and Sunrisers Eastern Cape – planned for Saturday, 11 February at the Wanderers – had been postponed due to a waterlogged field and inclement weather.

The match will now instead start at 13h30 on Sunday, 12 February, the scheduled reserve day.

The good news for cricket fans is that the weather forecast does look more favourable for Sunday.

On Saturday, the ground preparation for the match had been compromised, with the pitch remaining under covers for three days and over 200ml of rain falling since Wednesday this week. The SA Weather Service has predicted a clearer outlook predicted for Sunday.

SA20 League Commissioner, Graeme Smith said on Saturday: “We’ve engaged the match officials, teams, groundsman, stakeholders and the SA Weather Service, and postponing the match is the best decision to allow for the possibility of a full match in drier conditions. We want to give the teams and spectators a memorable Final.”

Gates will open at 10h30. All tickets remain valid for the reserve day and public who have booked Park and Ride can use the same tickets for this service.

Despite a favourable forecast, if there is no outcome on Sunday, the trophy will be shared between the Pretoria Capitals and Sunrisers Eastern Cape.

However, a member of the tournament’s organising committee confirmed to News24 Sport that every effort would be made to ensure it goes ahead as planned on Sunday.

“Essentially, the teams, umpires and other stakeholders go into the final with the assumption that there’s no reserve day in place,” he said.

“We need about 54 minutes to complete a 5-an-over contest. So, instead of calling things off early and deciding to come back again on Sunday, we’ll try to get the game in on Saturday.”
