The inaugural SA20 is set to break barriers in South African cricket with a record R70 million in prize money on offer in the competition.

SA20 League organisers confirmed the total – the biggest prize pool in the history of South African domestic cricket – on Tuesday and say they it underlines SA20’s long-term commitment to investing in South African cricket and its players.

The league will get underway at Newlands Cricket Ground on Tuesday, 10 January when MI Cape Town will host provincial rivals the Paarl Royals.

Commenting on the lucrative prize on offer, SA20 League Commissioner Graeme Smith said: “We have worked hard to offer a rewarding and unprecedented incentive in the first season of SA20. This is a first for South African cricket, we have never had this type of competitive incentive in our domestic cricket and it is a further indication of SA20’s ambitions to positively impact South African cricket.”

Earlier this month, a well-known sports betting company came on board at the main sponsor of the six-team tournament. The teams — MI Cape Town, Paarl Royals, Pretoria Capitals, Durban’s Super Giants, Sunrisers Eastern Cape and Joburg Super Kings — are all backed by Indian Premier League franchises.

Each SA20 league squad will be allowed to have a maximum of eight overseas players, and the maximum of four on-field overseas players at any time during the match remains unchanged. The franchise’s salary cap following the auction will remain outside of the wild card player’s fee.
