In the fourth and penultimate part of this ongoing series, we shine a spotlight on how Aiden Markram, David Miller and Kagiso Rabada fronted up at the T20 event:

PART 1 | HOW PROTEAS PLAYERS PERFORMED – DE KOCK AND SHAMSI

AIDEN MARKRAM (8)

Markram recently climbed to the No 3 spot in the latest T20I rankings for batters, while also breaking into the top 10 for all-rounders, rising seven places to No 7.

It’s a reflection of an outstanding tournament for the 27-year-old, who proved that he has developed into a highly effective red ball cricketer.

Markram started the tournament with a well played 40 under immense pressure against Australia, while he powered his way to an unbeaten 51 off just 26 balls in the next game against the West Indies.

Although he misfired against Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, he ended the tournament with a sensational 52 not out against England, this time with a strike rate of 208.

KAGISO RABADA (6)

The Proteas paceman finished the tournament with a historic T20 hat-trick, but that was a mere consolation in a losing cause against England.

In that key game, Rabada had conceded 12 runs an over for figures of 3-48. It was an unfortunate time for the fast bowler to misfire, particularly after producing decent displays against Australia, the West Indies and particularly Bangladesh (3-20).

Against Sri Lanka, Rabada went wicketless and conceded 32 runs, which simply sums up a tournament where he battled with inconsistency on challenging surfaces.

If the Proteas were going to progress to the knockout stage of the World Cup, they really needed a senior statesman such as Rabada to be at his absolute best.

DAVID MILLER (5)

South Africa’s most-capped T20 player enjoyed one standout moment of glory when he powered the Proteas to victory against Sri Lanka with some big hitting at the death.

That score of 23 not out off 13 balls was as good as it got, though, with Miller not batting against the West Indies and England. Against Australia he was dismissed for 16, while he was five not out against Bangladesh.

All considered, it calls the composition of the Proteas’ batting lineup into question as to why one of the most experienced and destructive power hitters wasn’t positioned in the prime No 4 slot.

Miller’s fielding was outstanding as usual, but unless he’s facing a decent chunk of overs, his impact will always be diluted.
