Proteas T20 captain Temba Bavuma has broken his silence on the ongoing saga involving batsman Quinton de Kock.

De Kock made headlines on Tuesday after making himself unavailable for the Proteas match against West Indies.

This after Cricket South Africa‘s request that the Proteas ‘take a knee’ in solidarity with Black Lives Matter before the start of their T20 World Cup match.

And Bavuma, said while the entire Proteas team is disappointed by De Kock’s action, the batsman’s decision should be respected.

“As a team, we were obviously surprised and taken aback by the news,” Bavuma told the media.

“Obviously, Quinton is a big player for the team, not just with the bat but the role that he plays from a senior point of view, and from experience point of view.

“And not having that at my disposal as a captain, it’s something I wasn’t looking forward to,” continued Bavuma.

“In saying that, Quinton is an adult. He’s a man in his own shoes. We respect his decision and his convictions.

“And I know that he will be standing behind whatever decision that he’s taken,” added Bavuma.
