Calvin Savage has opted to continue his cricketing career from a base in the United States after signing a three-year deal with Major League Cricket outfit Michigan Stars.

Savage joins David White, Andries Gous, Corne Dry, Shadley van Schalkwyk as the South African former franchise players plying their trade in a league backed by an Indian media giant.

Calvin Savage quits SA

The former Dolphins and Cape Cobras all-rounder said the opportunity was one he couldn’t pass up. He said the prospect of settling down in a period of his career when he might expect to shift about the South African domestic scene to maintain employment, was a major selling point.

“I feel like I have given it a fair go in South African cricket. I had tried to make it happen, to play for South Africa. But I just didn’t see that happening. If it was going to happen, it would have happened by now,” Savage told Club Cricket SA.

“It is getting harder and harder in SA. Opportunities are more and more limited. In America, there is a lot more stability and I am happy to be on a three-year contract with the Michigan Cricket Stars.

“I want to help grow cricket in the US over the next three years. Having my family together for the next three years – and the stability that provides – is great.

Major League cricket a major league opportunity

Savage is relishing the opportunity to help grow the game in the US.

“It’s all about growing cricket in the US. I could possibly get a go in the Caribbean Premier League, too.”
