Cricket South Africa (CSA) has named Dewald ‘Baby AB’ Brevis in the 13-man South Africa Invitational squad to play against the West Indies in Benoni this week.

The fixture, set to take place between 21-23 February, is an unofficial three-day match and will form part of the visiting team’s preparations ahead of the first Betway Test against the Proteas, which is scheduled to get underway on Tuesday, 28 February at SuperSport Park in Centurion.

The squad is made up of a mix of provincial players that were made available by their respective provincial teams.

The inclusion of young Brevis is the most eye-catching selection, with this being his first taste of red-ball cricket in the longer form of the game.

The 19-year-old batting sensation has long been earmarked for higher honours with the Proteas in all three formats of the game, but to date limited overs cricket has been his priority.

If this selection is anything to go by, it now appears that Brevis is being groomed to Test match cricket in the not so distant future and the match between SA Invitational and West Indies is the first step in his preparation process.

The match at Willowmore Park is scheduled to get underway at 10:00 on Tuesday morning.
