Temba Bavuma considering quitting T20 captaincy

Proteas skipper Temba Bavuma has revealed that he is mulling giving up the T20 Captaincy in light of what is best for the team.

Proteas skipper Temba Bavuma has revealed that he is mulling giving up the T20 Captaincy.

Bavuma now leads South Africa in all three formats but is without a doubt up against it in the T20 format.

The captain has struggled for form in the T20 game and his performance at the recent world cup was considered the millstone dragging the team down.

He bounced back in a good ODI series against England. However, Bavuma is yet to prove his T20 chops to his doubters.

He realises that he might have to make a call on the status of the T20 team, but says that is not his immediate priority.

“I was always going to consider my role when it comes to the white ball stuff probably in the best interest of the team and everyone involved,” Bavuma said at a press conference ahead of the series against the West Indies. 

“I was always going to make that decision and it was just a matter of when.

“But there was no urgency from my side in terms of coming out and saying I am stepping down as T20 captain.”

New Test coach Shukri Conrad, hand-picked Bavuma as his skipper in an era where more control for the coach has been promised.

Bavuma has a good idea on Conrad’s vision.

He said: “Communication came from Shukri, we had a conversation and he explained to me where he would like to take the team and he wanted me to be the guy to take the team to those heights and fulfil that vision.

“I had certain questions that I wanted to ask him to understand why he chose me for the role and I was satisfied with what he said to me.”
