Captain Temba Bavuma struck a stunning century to help the Proteas beat England by five wickets in the second ODI and a 2-0 series win in Bloemfontein Sunday.

The Proteas won the toss and decided to bowl in the second one-day international against England at the Mangaung Oval in Bloemfontein on Sunday.

England’s top three — Jason Roy (nine), Dawid Malan (12) and Ben Duckett (20) — never really get going and failed to trouble the Proteas bowlers as they combined for a grand total of 41 runs before they fell by the wayside one by one. Lungi Ngidi, Wayne Parnell and Keshav Maharaj accounted for the trio’s respective dismissals.

The responsibility fell to Harry Brook and captain Jos Buttler to get their team back on track and the duo did what was required as they inspired England to an imposing total of 342-7 in their 50 overs, with Brook scoring 80 runs of 75 balls and Buttler contributing 94* runs from 82 deliveries.

But there efforts were overshadowed by Bavuma’s well-measured century for the Proteas.

There was uncertainty about Quinton de Kock’s availability to contribute to the batting lineup after he was forced off the field with a thumb injury during England’s innings.

As it turned out, De Kock strode out to open the batting for the Proteas alongside Bavuma and the pair put on a rapid 77-run opening partnership. But de Kock then lost his wicket with his score on 31.

The Proteas skipper was joined at the crease by Rassie van der Dussen and the pair batted together beautifully before their 97-run partnership was broken when Sam Curran bowled Bavuma out.

From there the Proteas wickets fell at regular intervals, before David Miller and Marco Jansen got together at the crease to see the team home. With the Proteas needing 70 of the last 10 overs (60 balls), the duo held their nerve to close out the game. Miller finished on 58* (37 balls) not out and Jansen on 32* (29 balls).

During this series, the Proteas will be led by caretaker coach Shukri Conrad for the series. The 55-year-old was appointed as South Africa’s new red-ball coach earlier this month, but is taking charge of the team in the interim, before New Zealand-based Rob Walter arrives in the country next month.
